996 Question (I did not do any research so asking you pros ;) )

The 996 changed it's headlights from the boxter lights to the newer 996 lights. Do they consider the new lights on the 996 make it a 996.2 or 996 second generation or is it still just 996? Thanks!!!

Uh, could you clear up that question?

Are you sure you're not talking about the change from 996 to 997?

996 heads are 996 headlight. Boxster headlights are boxster head lights.

he is talking about when they made the change to the turbo look head lights in about '02 or so. They never really made the .2 designation with the 996... just make sure you reference the "later" or "turbo" 996 head lights.

996's are commonly referred to as MK I or MK II.
But I'd bet most who know what a 996 is will know what you mean by 996.1 or 996.2.

I was slightly confused too, but I think he means when the 996 had the same front end as the 986 Boxster.

To answer your question, the 996 was introduced with the Boxster front end, then Porsche showed the 911 Turbo. So Porsche adopted those headlights and some power and displacement upgrades to the 996, or as you put it, the new 996 headlights. The new 996 is commonly called the 996 facelift, and 996 mkII, but 996.2 will work too.

Sorry for not making it clear. I was referring to the boxter front end that the early 996 had before they went to the turbo look. Thqanks everyone!
