Hamilton has some really nice watches in the $500-$900 price range.

Hamilton is a nice starter brand. The Valjoux 7750 chrono movement is very reliable.

I have a Nixon as a casual watch and I think it looks good for being an oversized watch. I paid about $280 for mine, so well within the budget you mentioned.

SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
Get a base model Teg Heuer, a Lum-Tec (I have 4 or 5), a Seiko SKX007, Citizen Eco-Zilla, or be smart and save for something you will never get rid of like a Panerai, Rolex, Breitling, etc. Good luck!

Thanks, they make some nice casual stuff at a very reasonable price. I think if I was looking now, I would have spent a little more and gotten a Lum-Tec, but no worries.

That nixon and the eco-zilla are massive! I'm of two minds on the oversized watch trend. Its cool they exist for big guys, but I'm seeing more and more skinny guys wearing them now and they just don't work. 40mm looks big on me, but 48mm would look comical.
