Bora Bora Travel Plans
#2
My travel agent booked mine using Classic Vacations. If you're based in the US, the exchange rate is going to hurt as the local currency is pegged to the Euro. How long are you thinking of going for? I would highly recommend going to at least one other island in Tahiti.
Also -- business class Air Tahiti Nui out of LAX is great -- a really painless flight.
In Bora Bora I would suggest the following places:
1. St. Regis - most expensive by far, but amazing. Go for the Deluxe OWB (scale goes OWB, Deluxe OWB, Premium OWB, Royal OWB). Unless of course $ is no object and you can swing the royal OWB.
2. Intercontinental Thalasso - opened a bit before the St. Regis in 2006 and also very nice. Diamond OWB here is probably your best bet. (Emerald->Sapphire->Diamond).
3. Bora Bora Nui - this is a great resort but the problem is that it doesn't really have views of the mountain or inner lagoon. The best OWB here face out toward the horizon, which IMHO is not a great. Still a great place though if that doesn't bother you.
4. Four Seasons -- I would put this at the top of the list/with the St. Regis if it were open, but it won't be until October. And given the spotty service in Bore Bora as a whole, I would be weary of staying in a resort right out of the gates. In general though, the 4S is in a similar location to the St. Regis (not quite as good view-wise but almost), with your same level of luxury if not slightly higher (projected).
There are older resorts (Pearl, Hotel Bora Bora, Sofitel, Meridien, etc). that are cheaper and more "Tahitian" in feel (read: smaller, less luxury, but more authentic to the roots of Bora Bora and since they have been established longer there are lots of fish and coral under the bungalows now). It's really about what you want.
As for other items..
If you're flying out of LAX, you have two options: Air Tahiti Nui or Air France. Air Tahiti Nui is the better flight (service-wise) but since it is a small airline they have been having some issues cancelling flights at the last minute recently.
In Bora Bora, you absolutely have to go to Villa Mahana. A small restaurant with only 7 tables operated by chef/owner Damien (A Corisican chef trained in France). Make a reservation months in advance for the "top table", which is a table separated from the others at the top of the villa with a view of the lagoon and the courtyard below with the other tables. Do the dual tasting menus with wine pairings. Amazing.
Let me know if you have any questions about your trip -- it is a fantastic place.

Friends of ours just got back from their honeymoon at the Bora Bora St. Regis...the pictures, and descriptions of this place are just amazing. The Jean-Georges restaurant was featuring Kobe Beef while they were there, there's also a sushi restaurant that they said was amazing. All in all a fantastic trip, although very low key, the only thing to do for the most part is relax, with maybe a scuba trip, or 'volcano tour' thrown in.
