This is still hip-hop, only Kanye has taken it to a new level.
I guess I have trouble as even seeing hip-hop as a musical genre, let alone seeing it as something with levels and depth.

One of my best friends is gonna be with him tonight in NY. If anyone is interested in going let me know and I'll see if he has any tickets left. It's going to be a very small private debut concert with about ~500 people.
And what did your friend think of this rant that happened at that show? I would love to hear his reaction to this, since he saw it in person.

Kanye West Says Taylor Swift's 2009 VMA Win Was Disrespectful, Claims 'Today' Exploited Him

Posted Wed Nov 24, 2010 1:03pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

In September, Kanye West apologized to Taylor Swift via Twitter.
"She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows," the "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" artist wrote. "She deserves the apology more than anyone."
West uttered a retraction of sorts Wednesday during a 1 a.m. performance at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. He stopped the concert for 10-minutes to rant about the media's scrutiny of his career.
West said he does not regret interrupting Swift's first Video Music Award win speech to champion Beyonce instead.
"When you do things like what happened last year, it's disrespectful to everyone who's creative," West said about MTV's decision to give Swift the honor. "It's a slap in the face to everyone who tries to do something real."
West implied that Swift and the VMA producers are lucky his disruption was brief.
"If I wasn't drunk, I would have been on stage longer," he said.
West compared the aftermath of the VMA incident to that of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina telethon in which he accused President Bush of not caring about black people.
West said he felt bad when people thanked him for dissing the president. "The whole time, I'm thinking, ‘That's not exactly what I wanted to say. I was emotional,'" he said. But he never set the record straight.
West said Swift handled the VMA fallout the same way. "Just as Taylor never came to my defense in any interview and rode the wave, and rode it, rode it, that's the way I rode the wave for the Bush comment," he said.
For the record, Swift did come to West's defense on the song "Innocent," which she performed on the 2010 VMAs and also appears on her "Speak Now" album. In the song, Swift lets West know that he has been forgiven. She sings, "Your string of lights is still bright to me."
During West's tirade, he also said he and Bush were exploited by "Today." The NBC program's assertion that Bush referred to West's comment as his lowest moment of his presidency is not true, Kanye argued.
"That's not what he said," West commented. "He said it's one of his lowest moments."
West accuses "Today" of purposefully taking Bush's comment out of context to boost ratings. "Because of the popularity of me they exploited that to make you watch the interview," he said, "and make you feel that he was stupider than ever to think that a rapper's comments could be his lowest moment."
West said his fifth studio album, the critically acclaimed "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," released Monday, sold 100,000 digital copies on the first day of release.
He is a classless POS that has less maturity than my 9 yr old daughters. And while he may have musical talent (debatable, at least), my hard earned money isn't going anywhere near his pockets.

Too many people to respond to, so I'll just respond to everyone (most of whom I'm sure haven't even heard the album, which in itself disqualifies you to even comment in the thread).

But to put it simply, the world isn't binary people. Being a douchebag doesn't correlate with a lack of talent. Douchebag or not, he's come to terms with who he is and is done explaining himself. I never spoke about his character, but rather that the album is just amazing. Anyone who truly understands music and appreciates music really can't disagree with that. It spans so many genres and is able to fuse them together with such fluidity that you wouldn't even think this is the same guy who's dropped two horrendous albums previously.

I find it incredibly myopic if you think that hip hop as a genre is talentless. Sure it spawns a culture of thuggishness and what not, but that's a derivative of the culture it comes from (black culture in the lower socioeconomic parts of america). And as hip hop evolves, so does the culture. This album being an example of that. I mean if you just use fashion as one metric to measure the culture (since we project ourselves heavily with what we wear), the aesthetic these days is much more clean cut and professional compared to even five years ago.

I think that talent in music can exist in any genre. I think that Rachmaninoff's Prelude (C#Minor) is brilliant. I also think that Moby Dick (LZ) is brilliant. As is When I'm Gone (Eminem) and Family Business (Kanye). Expanding your musical taste beyond a specific genre and finding talent elsewhere is part of being a fan of music is all about.

And it's laughable that the Aussie who thinks I'm a hipster spewing faux intellectual bullshit has an avatar of AC/DC, arguably the worst "rock n roll" band ever, repeating the same 4 chord progressions in different phrasings. Maybe just a bit more talented than Nirvana, and possibly worth having as an avatar if only because they're probably the only band to have come out of that country.

And to everyone who says "oh well because he's a douchebag, I won't support him", who the hell do you support? Rock N Roll musicians who tie 18 year old girls up and stuff raw fish in their twat (Google "Bonham Fish")? Nobody here is a douchebag right? Yeah, until they are.

Anyways, if you want to take a listen, take a listen. It's brilliant, trust me. If you continue to think that hip hop is talentless, well then I'm sorry. Endless curiosity is what drives me but I guess that's not the case with most people. Oh, and this long defense on hip hop is coming from a blues guitarist.

Firstly, I'm a ****ing New Zealander.

Secondly, no **** it, I can't be bothered. But keep using the words ' gut wrenching ' to describe a hip hop album. It's fierce.

Actually. Just one more thing.

You call yourself a blues guitarist. If that were true, then you could appreciate what ac/dc have done with those 4 chords, instead of been so condescending. There's a reason why nobody can cover an ac/dc song properly, it's about feel, and about a groove. That's what makes those 4 basic chords sound so ****ing good.

And just fwiw, I wasn't talking about you when I made my initial, hipster post. So calm, the ****, down. Go listen to Kanye, and get your stomach all tied up in knots.

I find it funny when someone uses the words "blues" and "4 chord progressions" in the same sentence. And trust me, no real musician wants to cover AC/DC.

Listen to the lyrics of this song and tell me they're not beautiful. For those that aren't able to follow them.

Bernie Madoff is talented, too. Doesn't make him any less of an asshole. I'm just saying...
