Looking for a shotgun or handgun

I am looking to pick up a gun here for the house, especially to have on hand for my g/f when im not home. I dont need anything really bad ass. And Im looking to stay in the 300.00 or so range. So I know a handgun is post likely out since a good handgun will run at least 500.00.

But if anyone can steer me in the right direction or has anything they want to sell. let me know

Excellent shotty. But more expensive than a 590 and not anymore (or less) durable. But the killer for me was the weird placement of the safety.

The 870 is a great piece. Just make sure both of you PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Learn how to load/unload, put it on/off safe, etc.

AND DO NOT LEAVE THE CHAMBER EMPTY SO YOU CAN "SCARE" THE BAD GUY WITH THE "CLICK-CLACK" SOUND!!!!

Adding to what has been said above, make sure to "pattern" your defense load so you know how much spread can be expected at different lengths

SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
+2 on the 870. They are usually </=$300. As for the handgun, get a Glock. I can't say enough good things about them. They don't rust, never jam, and are pretty accurate. Of course, take Chris' advice and practice (x3), and maybe get some private lessons... Just my $0.02.

That's just what my instructor told us when we got our concealed carry permits when I lived in Vegas.

That's just enough time to get yourself killed.
