This is a guy that loved having guns, but wasn't prepared to know how to handle them when the SHTF.

You don't go barging around the house without having an idea where the guy is. Find a cover/concealed position until such time that he knows where the guy is, or stay put, safe; and ready to blow the idiots head off.

There isn't a room in my house where I could not articulate a defensive position.

Last thing I'd do is run and let the scumbag invade my home. If I was able to get my wife and child out safely, then we'd do that. But if I did get them out, I'd be waiting on the guy upon his exit.

The run/hide, let em take mindset only encourages this type of predatorial behavior.

I forgot my car keys on the ignition (was the truck, actually) on the driveway ... after a week, I spent ages digging through the house until I checked the truck ... and yeah. There they were. I try not to do it on purpose, though ...

Shouldn't have a home defense weapon without a plan. Good that he only got grazed, but he was lucky.

This is one reason why our three year old sleeps in our room. Given our current situation, we would remain in bedroom with doors locked, call 911 and advise them that we're armed, let police do their job and if bad guy gets to us first, blast 'em on sight.

If your kids are sleeping upstairs and you don't have a good safety plan such as heavy locked doors or a panic room, and because you don't know if the bad guy will shoot them without reason, you may find yourself in a situation where you do need to confront the bad guy. Knowing what we know now, if we ever build another house it will be set up a little strategically smarter.

How to clear rooms and deal with intruders, including simulators in houses and such, are covered at places like Frontsight and Gunsite. If any of you haven't done such a class, you should consider doing so.

My last house, just three doors down from my current one, I never even had a key to it. Went to Europe for a month, and many 2+ week-long trips, without ever locking it. No alarm, no gated community, mid-town neighborhood. We lock the doors at night (although usually not the back ones if anybody needs to grab a beer out of the fridge), but never during the day, and never the cars.

Quietly waiting behind cover is the best course of action, but if you do decide you want to clear rooms, your gun must be up and pointed where you're looking. As someone else said, this guy may have been a gun enthusiast, but he wasn't prepared for CQB. If he'd been clearing rooms while looking down the barrel of his weapon, when the two of them came face to face...BANG no more head. I don't know what he was doing, but he wasn't up on target, that's for sure.

Pointing your gun at the ceiling or the floor is some TV Detective shit that will get you killed.
