New rifle input

Ok, so I've had several different civvie M4s (and I get a 416 or M4 overseas), but I sold the ones I had. I was holding out for a civilian version of the 416, but it looks like I'll hold my breath forever (esp. if Obama gets elected). So, the question is, do I get an LMT or KAC M4-type or go with an M1A Scout (the SOCOMs are WAY too heavy).

The M4s would get a RAS, grip, EO-Tech, maybe a PEQ. The M1A would get an EO-Tech. They would mostly be for plinking, fam training, etc.

Obviously budget for rifle + optics is about $3500 or so... I could spend more if it was something totally worthy. I considered an SR-25 (or SR-25 carbine), but those are more of a sniper-type vs. GP type.

Thanks!!

If you want something on the quality level (IMHO above) the 416, LWRC OR Patriot Ordinance without question.

There is nothing else out there that I'd be interesting in buying right now outside of those brands.

Are all the LW guns piston or delayed gas? I definitely want the piston... I'm truly a believer.

EDIT - Looks like the M6A2 fits the bill.... Thanks for the heads-up. Looks good (even w/a 14-week backorder).

I love my LMT. It is far superior to the handful of other ARs I have shot. Having the ability to swap out different length and caliber barrels is also a nice plus.

If I were to buy another gas gun, I'd certainly take a long hard look at LMT.

Chris, to your question, which you've probably answered for yourself at this point; but yea, LWRC and Patriot are all piston driven. After owning a couple of these piston peashooters, I'm surprised that the gas guns won out for the military.

The big controversy now is why the mil hasn't gone to piston guns. I believe an OK congressman has pushed it hard enough that there's a retest in the works. SOCOM bubbas have the SCAR in both variants and the folks I know got 416s (and likely 417s by this point).

All boils down to $$$ on why they haven't converted. The entire military could have been retrofitted with the better-performing HK416s by now, the DoD didn't want to spend the money. Plus there's Colt's stranglehold contract to consider.

I just saw a Barret 6.8 cal all trimmed out with Eo-tech goodies. Sweet riffle and a cool caliber.

unfortunately i wish the the 6.8 SPC was more readily available as Chris mentioned earlier..that round sounds very promising as well as the 6.5
