No Room For Excuses Against Bayern Munich - Barcelona Captain Carles Puyol

The captain recognised that at this stage of the competition they should be motivated enough...

Carles Puyol has said that there is no room for excuses when Barcelona take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
The Catalans are still competing on three fronts this season and against the attacking talents of the German side are likely to have their work cut out for them.
When asked about fatigue and motivation today though, Puyol said that he did not want to hear about them as possible excuses.
"The motivation to win gives you all the strength you need to keep going. The team’s playing well right now and there’s no room for excuses," he told the official Barcelona website.
"We have to play aggressively, both defensively and in attack...We believe Barca can win. We’re looking for a good result that will set us up to get through to the next round."
Certainly a good result at the Camp Nou this week would be a big step towards the semi-finals of the competition, where either Liverpool or Chelsea would await.
Puyol knows that the German side will be dangerous though and that they have quality players in their ranks.
"They are a big club, with great players and an impressive history. They have players who can win the game and we’ll have to be careful – they are going to be dangerous," he said.
"We have a lot of respect for them. At this stage of the competition all the teams are good."
The captain was also asked about how Bayern's defeat in the Bundesliga at the weekend might affect them, and said he believes it could make them stronger.
"They’re going to come out even more motivated now and that just makes them more dangerous," he concluded.

Guardiola Assures Barcelona Will Attack Bayern Munich

The coach knows that it will be tough but says his side are going to play as they have done all season...
Pep Guardiola has declared that his Barcelona side will go out to attack Bayern Munich when they meet in the Champions League tomorrow evening.
The Catalans go into the match as favourites but with the German side possessing their own talent in the final third, it looks set to be an entertaining encounter.
Speaking to the press today, Guardiola acknowledged that it will not be easy and that his team will play as they have done all season.
"We will play in the best possible way, you know how that is as you have seen us this year. We will play our way, knowing the strengths of the opponents, and we will try to get a good result for the return leg, where the qualifying round will be decided, because they are very strong," Marca quotes him as saying.
"It will not be easy, but we will be looking to create and make chances on goal. We will try to score and not concede, everything is important, but playing against big teams it hurts to let in goals. We will try to work the ball and to be intense at all times, to create opportunities.
"We know that a lot of mistakes are penalised and that you can be knocked out of the competition. You need to be at a high level to score and we are lucky to be able to play in this game tomorrow."
The former player went on to state that his side will be taking each game at a time and seeing where they get to.
"We are fortunate to have got here, there is no doubt about it, now we will go game by game and see what happens. We expect to get as far as possible, but we are lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy this and to be able to win titles," he mused.
Ribery And Alves
Predictably, much of the build-up coming into the match as been about the attacking talent on display in both sides, from the front and back.
Guardiola looked forward to what could be one of the most exciting battles on the night; Franck Ribery against Daniel Alves.
"He [Ribery] is a very fast, very forward player, who plays on both wings, is very direct and scores goals. We will try to defend against him together and make sure he does not get into the match," he explained.
"I do not know where Ribery will play tomorrow but Dani will play knowing that he has to be solid and to keep playing how he is at the moment. It is not just him who will have the problem of a player in front of them as good as Ribery."
The coach also spoke about Luca Toni, who is likely to be the main goal threat for Bayern with Miroslav Klose injured.
"Toni is very difficult to defend against in the area and we will have to move him away because there can be fouls. He is large so he uses his body and is one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment," he said.
Finally, Guardiola was asked about Barcelona's poor recent record against Bayern, and claimed that if anything, they are the favourites in the tie.
"We will try to break the statistics, before a game, being favourite counts for nothing. If anyone has a tiny advantage it is them, as they have the chance to play the second leg at home and for me, that is better. We are playing against a historic team, where the shirt means a lot and there is pride. It is a challenge to play against them," he concluded.
