Champions League Preview: Barcelona - Bayern Munich

In what could be the tie of the round, Barcelona will lock horns with Bayern Munich at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening...
Barcelona may be seen by many to be favourites to win the Champions League this season as their brand of attractive, attacking football has won them plaudits as well as the majority of their matches.
Confidence is sky high at Camp Nou ahead of the first leg, but there is an added pressure that only briefly reared its head after the draw was made and was then quickly suppressed in favour of the club line.
The Blaugrana were desperate to play the second leg at home and there were a few worried comments after their name was pulled out to play in the Allianz Arena after playing in Catalunya.
While president Joan Laporta and director Txiki Begiristain were the first to mention their disappointment at the way things had gone in Nyon, Switzerland, the players also explained that psychologically they would have to dig deep for the first match.
Since then, the adage has been to take it one game at a time and the home side are expecting to head into the first encounter with Bayern going for goals to give them a comfortable lead for the second game in Germany next week.
That could be where the pressure comes though as Barca have conceded the most goals in the competition out of the eight remaining clubs, having conceded eleven in during their eight matches so far.
Morale Boost
Pep Guardiola's team have also yet to keep a clean sheet on home soil which is a statistic that will not have gone unnoticed by Bayern, and Klinsmann will have worked out how every one of those goals was scored.
Barcelona warmed up for the encounter with a morale-boosting win at Real Valladolid to ensure that they remained six points clear at the top of La Primera.
Samuel Eto'o scored the only goal of the game in the Jose Zorilla against a side which they could have struggled against after the international break, but Guardiola's team dominated for long periods.
The Barca coach was even able to rest certain players such as Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves after their long trips to South America, and is now expected to name his strongest team against Bayern.
Klinsmann did not enjoy such a good weekend as he saw his team beaten 5-1 at Bundesliga title rivals Wolfsburg in a game that could either dent their confidence or be a wake-up call.
In their last Champions League away outing, the Bavarian outfit scored five goals against Sporting and then netted another seven in the Allianz Arena to make people sit up and take notice.
Outside Bets
A few punters believe that the club are dark horses for the title that they last won in 2001 because they have impressed throughout this season's tournament, while the spotlight has been on the four English clubs and Barcelona.
Omens may not be good for Bayern though as they have been beaten at this stage in 2002, 2005 and 2007, but they have defeated Barcelona in their last two ties, winning three games and drawing the other.
The two coaches first met in the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1995-96, when Klinsmann and Guardiola were on opposing sides and the former Tottenham Hotspur striker helped his side to win 2-1 in Camp Nou after a 2-2 draw in the Olympic Stadium in Munich.
Ten years ago the two sides met again in the Champions League with Bayern winning both 1-0 at home and then 2-1 away thanks to goals from Alexander Zockler and Hasan Salihamidzic.
Xavi Hernandez is the only player from either club to have played in that last meeting, but far more were present when Lionel Messi netted the only goal in a friendly in the Allianz Arena, while Barca also won 4-0 in their annual pre-season Trofeo Joan Gamper tournament in recent seasons.
But Xavi is not the only player to have played an official game against Bayern as Thierry Henry has appeared for Arsenal against the Germans in 2000 and in 2005. Sylvinho was also in the Gunners' team nine years ago, while Seydou Keita played for Lens against them in 2003 and Eidur Gudjohnsen helped Chelsea to beat them in 2004-05.

TEAM NEWS

Barcelona
Toure Yaya and Aliaksandr Hleb were given the green light to play in the game and have been included in the squad. Guardiola is reported to be set to name what he considers to be his strongest team available rather than consider the carefully planned rotations that he has implemented for the majority of the campaign so far. Eric Abidal and Gaby Milito are still sidelined, but Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol have shaken off recent knocks to be ready, both having made their comebacks at the weekend.
Probable Starting XI: Valdes, Alves, Pique, Marquez, Puyol, Xavi, Toure, Iniesta, Messi, Eto'o, Henry

Bayern Munich
The visitors are without the duo of Lucio and Daniel van Buyten at the back with the Brazilian being injured and the Dutchman having lost his father recently, but Klinsmann does have Martin Demechelis available to help boost his options. The coach is also not short of choices up front even though Miroslav Klose has been out of action since the middle of last month with an ankle injury. Tim Borowski and Luca Toni were all given the green light last week after recovering from knocks, while Ribery is expected to start having shaken off his three week lay off.
Probable Starting XI: Rensing; Oddo, Demichelis, Breno, Lahm; Schweinsteiger, Van Bommel, Ze Roberto, Ribery; Toni, Podolski

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona)
While many will look to Messi to win this game for the home team, the Cameroonian striker could be the key with his pace, guile and goals. His position at Barcelona is being monitored by various major clubs across Europe as he has yet to publicly state whether of not he will remain at Camp Nou. If he demands too much in the summer in contract talks then the Blaugrana could cash in a year before he can leave for free.
Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)
The mercurial Frenchman has been winning headlines across Europe this term, but the biggest headlines that have included his name have been transfer stories linking him with a host of the continent's biggest clubs. Barcelona are one of those being mentioned and the home fans will have a chance to see first hand how good he really is when the pressure is on.

PREDICTION

Given that these two teams are the top goalscorers in the competition, it should be an open and attacking game. Barcelona will no doubt hit the net, but after after their heavy defeat at the weekend Bayern will be keen to put that behind them by setting themselves up with a chance of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League with a good display in Camp Nou.

Barcelona 3 - 2 Bayern Munich

We’re the blue and claret supporters
It matters not where we hail from
Whether it's the south or the north
Now we all agree, we all agree,
One flag unites us in brotherhood.
Blue and claret blowing in the wind
One valiant cry
We’ve got a name that everyone knows:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!

United we are strong.
We’ve achieved much over the years,
We’ve shouted many goals
And we have shown, we have shown,
That no one can ever break us.
Blue and claret blowing in the wind
One valiant cry
We’ve got a name that everyone knows:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!
