‘Teams pushing for Bahrain cancellation’

‘Teams pushing for Bahrain cancellation’ - GPUpdate.net

It is believed Formula 1 teams have united in attempting to call off the reinstated Bahrain Grand Prix. Through FOTA (Formula One Teams Association), eleven outfits - all bar Hispania - have written a letter to governing body the FIA, commercial rights holder Formula One Management (FOM) and the Sakhir circuit.

With Sakhir’s season-opening slot having been postponed due to civil unrest in capital city Manama, the race was placed back on the 2011 calendar on Friday following a recent visit to the country by FIA Vice President Carlos Gracia. Furthermore, leaked FIA dossiers now suggest Gracia has described Bahrain’s current situation as ‘completely normal’; this is not reflected in local and international news reports, which continue to depict bloodshed and general disruption in the Arab Kingdom.

“The teams have discussed the 2011 calendar within FOTA,” a FOTA spokesperson was able to tell GPUpdate.net on Tuesday night. “They have expressed their views privately in a letter to the FIA, FOM and Bahrain International Circuit. Further comments at this moment would not be appropriate.”

This is the first thing that came to my mind when I heard they'd put it back on the schedule.

Personally I agree with Webber's sentiments, and I hope this GP is cancelled this year. Despite how accepting the Indian GP big wigs are being, there are obviously issues in Bahrain that aren't sorted out. It's pathetic that one person is in charge of determining the "safety" of F1 coming to Bahrain. Of course he was given the "look, no problems here" tour that any big shot gets...no different than when you were a little kid and your teacher knew the principal was coming to walk by the classroom & he/she told everyone to be on their best behavior. It's BS, and another note Brazil is the deserving country for the season finale...not Bahrain or India.
