Lewis Hamilton has compared Sebastian Vettel’s start to the 2011 season to those of Michael Schumacher in the early years of the last decade. Vettel, who became Germany’s second Formula 1 title winner last year, has currently scored 93 of a maximum 100 points on offer.
Having started the season with victories in Australia and Malaysia, Vettel was beaten by the McLaren of Hamilton in China before fighting back in Istanbul on Sunday.
"34 points is a very big gap at the moment,” Hamilton is quoted as saying by The Daily Star. “He was cruising in Turkey.
“I’ve got to be on the ragged edge to try and get every little step I can. It’s very similar to when Schumacher was dominating; now Sebastian is dominating – pole position at all four races this season and he’s nearly won all four.”
When asked if Vettel could clinch the title mid-season, as Schumacher did in 2001, 2002 and 2004, Hamilton replied: “I don’t have a fear that will happen, but it is possible. But it’s also possible we could catch up and overtake them.”
