Trulli critical of F1's continuous changes

Jarno Trulli has hit out at F1's powers-that-be, saying that constant changes to the regulations are putting fans off the sport.

This year's Championship will see a switch from Bridgestone to Pirelli tyres, the return of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) and the introduction of moveable wings.

And although all the changes have been implemented in the hope of improving the spectacle, Trulli reckons they are actually putting fans off.

"There are too many new things, from aerodynamics to tyres to KERS" the 36-year-old told the Gazzetta Sportiva newspaper.

"We talk about saving money but each year the rules change, people don't understand, it becomes less of a show."

But that's not the Italian's only gripe.

Trulli, who will race for Team Lotus this season, is also 'embarrassed' by the war over the rights to the Lotus name, which, as it stands, will see two Lotus-named teams on the grid: Team Lotus and Lotus Renault.

"Which is the real one? We don't know, it's embarrassing, surreal," he said.

As for his 2011 Championship hopes, the Italian is desperate to score a point for his fledgling team, something they failed to do last season.

"One year I can suffer, another one no," he said.

"When I started there was a lot of quality because many constructors tried to get winning drivers. Now the budgets of many teams are determined by the sponsorships brought in by drivers."

I have to agree with the guy. It's cool to see new innovations in the sport but with drastic rule changes every season, it detracts from the racing to a certain degree and it's certainly not keeping development costs down.

One of my ideas was to just keep the 3.0L V10 formula and control HP/speeds by eliminating all wings above the tire height, thus emphasizing mechanical grip and underbody aero, rather than wings which are more affected by dirty air. This would limit cars' HP, since they'd still need to drive the car... Plus we'd get to see some of this again:

Why do guys like Trulli, Lauda, Stewart, etc. have to constantly open their mouths about the state and nature of a sport that they haven't been a significant part of in decades? (or, in Trulli's case: ever)

Seriously, people. I don't want to hear what Dan Marino or "the Refrigerator" Perry have to say about NFL politics, and I certainly don't want to hear from Jarno "who did he drive for, again?" Trulli.
