Heikki Kovalainen has revealed the extent of injures suffered for himself and girlfriend Catherine Hyde after the Audi the pair were racing suffered mechanical failures and crashed heavily in the Race of Champions on Sunday.
Up against seven-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb in a head-to-head which marked the start of the day’s action, Kovalainen’s car suffered a simultaneous stuck throttle and suspension failure which resulted in the Audi R8 shooting through polystyrene lane dividers and across Loeb’s path before suffering a heavy impact with the wall.
‘Been put to bed rest at home as a precaution, heavy concussion, further tests next few days as head took a big hit,’ the Lotus driver explained via his personal Twitter feed.
‘But hey (Catherine) put to bed rest as well because of hairline fractured pelvis, so someone's keepin me company!’
The Finn’s message was followed shortly by another from his English partner: ‘Hospital results: injured hip, pelvis and leg muscles for me, concussion for Heikki! Both of us on bed rest for a while...'
