Ferrari and Fernando Alonso remained quickest as the second practice session was staged in Belgium on Friday afternoon. However, with a wet track having dried before the end of the period, teams lost some twelve and a half minutes of running time as a group of children climbed the circuit’s safety fencing.
With 2 o’clock signalling the green light for the second 90-minute session of the day, Sébastien Buemi and Michael Schumacher were first out on-track with Wet tyres for Toro Rosso and Mercedes before the Swiss contemplated running on Intermediates.
However, it was World Champion Jenson Button who was first to switch rubber type, closely followed by Alonso who duly set the day’s best lap time thus far. However, shortly after 2:15pm, with all cars going out on Intermediates, the confidence of Timo Glock and Vitantonio Liuzzi was knocked as they spun off the circuit.
In the Italian’s case, his Force India touched the white line under braking for the Rivage hairpin but managed to reverse and rejoin the session. The German was out of action, though, after also touching a white line and hitting the Liège barriers sideways.
Other Germans Schumacher and Nico Hülkenberg had worries of their own, with the 7-time title winner suffering a large slide in the middle of daunting Eau Rouge as the Williams man complained of his Intermediates graining after only a single lap.
Half an hour later, Jaime Alguersuari had switched to Slicks for Toro Rosso and easily hit the top spot before sharing the position with Kamui Kobayashi’s Sauber over the following minutes.
Mark Webber could be seen mysteriously slowing out of La Source as Rubens Barrichello spun his Williams; however, the Red Bull man’s moment appeared to be an engine check, as the Australian speeded back up on the exit of Les Combes.
With Trulli going straight on at Fagnes and a number of cars skipping across the new Les Combes run-off area, there were no major dramas until unexpected red flags flew with 15 and a half minutes to go.
Annoying all teams in the process, with crucial dry running time being lost, FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting was forced to take to the wheel of the Safety Car and inspect the track as Race Control warned of spectators being in a possible ‘dangerous position’.
With Whiting not stopping on-track, a further message before the end of the session explained that children had been climbing catch fencing somewhere in the vicinity of the race track.
Prior to the action continuing, Alonso headed a queue which consisted of the entire field in the pit lane. However, although the session was officially restarted at 3:26pm a further minute was lost when a malfunctioning pit exit light remained red, meaning marshals had to wave competitors out with a green flag.
Leading the pack from team-mate Massa, Alonso commandingly set the most rapid Friday time in the form of 1:49.032 as the Hispania of Sakon Yamamoto ground to a halt on the Kemmel Straight and another rain shower arrived.
