Lotus Racing has confirmed that 16-year-old Malaysian Nabil Jeffri will be testing its Formula 1 car next month. The early September run for the Formula BMW Pacific driver will be held at an undisclosed location in the United Kingdom.
Currently competing in Formula BMW Pacific for Eurasia Motorsport, Jeffri is placed fifth overall. Next month’s F1 test will be an aerodynamic run for Lotus, which will involve driving in straight lines and is permitted in certain numbers despite the current in-season ban on circuit running outside of race weekends.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to drive for Lotus Racing in the aero test,” said Nabil, who is part of the AirAsia ASEAN Driver Development Programme. “It’s a big privilege to gain driving experience with the most promising new F1 team.
“Driving the Lotus Racing car will definitely be a priceless exposure to the F1 driving experience and I’m looking forward to many more similar opportunities to arise as a result of being part of the AirAsia Driver Development program.”
Team Principal Tony Fernandes is also delighted with the arrangement, with Malaysia’s sole F1 driver so far having been Minardi’s Alex Yoong in 2002.
“It’s an exciting day for all of us in the Lotus Racing team,” he commented. “It shows that there is a clear route to the top rung of the motorsport ladder, no matter how old you are or where you are racing. I’m sure that, before he gets in the hot seat, he’ll be speaking to (test driver) Fairuz Fauzy for some advice.”

they are a malaysian team. tony fernandes (team principle) owns air asia which is a malaysian company. this is a malay outfit through and through, even their govt has a hand in the team.
