Bourdais tops first Le Mans qualifying session
Bourdais tops first Le Mans qualifying session - Le Mans Series news - GPUpdate.net
Sébastien Bourdais headed a Peugeot 1-2-3 as qualifying began for this year's Le Mans 24 Hours on Wednesday. Behind the leading French cars, the ORECA Peugeot entry of Olivier Panis was fourth ahead of Audi and Aston Martin.
A pattern emerged immediately on Wednesday night, with Bourdais setting an example courtesy of a best effort of 3:19.711, six tenths of a second quicker than the team's other two evenly-matched cars and 1.4 seconds up on ORECA.
It was not a smooth-running session, though, as 40 minutes of the total two hours on offer were compromised under red flag situations, the first of which was caused as the #88 Felbermayr Porsche lost control and went into a spin, blocking the track on the approached to Indianapolis.
The second stoppage came as the AF Corse Ferrari of Matias Russo crashed at the Porsche curves, eventually finishing seventh on the GT2 timesheets and one position behind team-mates Jean Alesi, Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander's entry.
Although ORECA finished ahead of Audi - whose leading car was that of Bernhard, Dumas, and Rockenfeller - the customer Peugeot was stranded on-track for much of the session after Nicolas Lapierre was forced to pull off due to fuel pick-up issues.
There were also notable moments for Bourdais and Sarrazin's Peugeots, with the latter's car having briefly taken off at Tertre Rouge.
The second P1 Peugeot included the leading British representative, as Anthony Davidson shares the cockpit of his 908 with fellow ex Formula 1 drivers Alexander Wurz of Austria and Marc Gené of Spain.
