Jerez Day 2: Paffett tops the timesheets
Formula One news: Jerez Day 2: Paffett tops the timesheets - GPUpdate.net Formula One
On the second day of the young drivers test at Jerez McLaren's Gary Paffett topped the timesheets. Paffett completed his fastest lap of the day in 1.18.718 in the South of Spain. His fastest time was almost half a second faster than anyone else.
On Wednesday testing continued for the ten teams being present in the South of Spain. In perfect sunny conditions the paddock welcomed Esteban Gutierrez who enjoyed his Formula 1 debut with the BMW Sauber F1 team. The Mexican driver was closely watched by former BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica.
The session was interrupted just once as Mirko Bortolotti came to a halt with the Scuderia Toro Rosso and was unable to restart the car.
Even though Gary Paffett covered thousands of miles already in a Formula 1 car the Briton was more than welcome in this week's young drivers test as he never competed in a Formula 1 race so far. Paffett clocked the fastest time on Wednesday afternoon and showed he is fast enough to join the F1 grid in 2010. Paffett is still hoping to join the grid next season, but if he fails to make it he will most likely continue racing in DTM for Mercedes.
At Renault Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung returned behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. The Superleague Formula driver completed a day of testing for the Williams F1 team in the past and had the Renault R26 to himself in the morning.
Testing will continue at Jerez on Thursday for the third and final day of testing in 2009.
