Räikkönen to join Italian rally

Formula One news: Räikkönen to join Italian rally - GPUpdate.net Formula One

Kimi Räikkönen will once again take to the rally track this weekend as the 2007 World Champion joins the Rally della Marca in Italy. Having already competed in the Arctic Lapland Rally four months ago, Kimi will now tackle the dry Italian tarmac road stages as opposed to the snow and ice of January.

There will be no slicks or KERS for Finn Räikkönen this weekend as he is joined in the cockpit by co-driver Kaj Lindstrom, who will be guiding him over the course of the event. "I want to thank the Scuderia for giving me the possibility to take part in such a competition," Räikkönen said on the Ferrari team's website. "I really enjoy myself and it will be my first experience on tarmac after some tests on snow last winter."

Also out of the equation will be a Ferrari as the Espoo-born driver makes best use of a vehicle provided by sister company Fiat, with Kimi driving the Grande Punto S2000 on the outskirts of Treviso over the course of Friday and Saturday. "As I'm coming from the race track it will be interesting to see what I will be able to do behind the wheel on the roads," he added.

True race car driver. He should be the Stig when he retires from F1.

Kimi Raikkonen's asphalt rally debut came to an abrupt halt after he crashed out of the Rally della Marca on SS3 in his Abarth Grande Punto S2000.

The car suffered rear suspension damage following an impact with a rock causing the right rear wheel to eventually come off and forcing Raikkonen to retire from the event.

Raikkonen was lying in 17th position (8th in S2000 category) before the crash and set 14th fastest time (7th S2000) on SS1. This was his third rally in the Tommi Makinen Racing prepared Abarth Punto Super 2000.

The rally was won by Italian Paolo Porro, in a Ford Focus RS WRC 06, who led from start to finish on the 9 stage event.
