"Winner takes all" in 2010, says Ecclestone
Formula One news: 'Winner takes all' in 2010, says Ecclestone - GPUpdate.net Formula One
Bernie Ecclestone has stressed that the new 'wins for the title' scoring system, postponed for this year's World Championship, will be in place at the start of the 2010 season. Ecclestone, the commercial rights holder of the sport, originally suggested the idea last year.
A new points system was thought of by the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) at the beginning of the month, to change the amount scored for the top three places to 12-9-7; the sport's governing body, the FIA, eventually elected to use the format which awards the winningest driver with the crown before FOTA responded by stating that no change to the regulations can take place after November, without the agreement of all teams; this subsequently resulted in the FIA referring back to the points system used last year, first introduced in 2003.
Ecclestone has since told BBC Radio 5 Live, however, that the new 'winner takes all' rule will be applied from the 2010 championship onwards: "It will be supported by the FIA and it will be in the regulations. So when people enter the championship, that's what the regulation will be. It's logic - in athletics you look at the 100 metres, you're not looking at the guy that's second, you're looking at the winner. In most sports people are looking at winners."
