especially full frame so you can use the L 2.8 wide zooms effectively

Not sure I understand what you mean 'shooting faster'?

a lower aperture lens is considered "faster"

Indeed. A 1.2 is "faster" than a 2.8. While this is industry standard, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Now, who's leg do I have to hump to get an avatar around here?

It means you can let in more light for your shot, opposed to a f/4 setting. This allows you to shoot at a faster shutter speed which is important in low lighting situations. Blur is a bitch once you go beyond a certain speed so its always nice to have that extra one or two clicks to compensate.

Also, IS helps as well.
