Thoughts on this Canon Lens

EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM

I'm thinking of getting this IS lens. Any thoughts? From reading the Canon site seems to be a good all around IS Lens.

Looking for feedback if any of you have it or if anyone can recommend a good IS Lens for a Canon.

after all these years you still cant spell my username!?

For the longest time this was my primary lens for the 20d. It has practically perfect walkaround range, is light, and I found my copy to be pretty sharp.

However, be aware that it is not the fastest lens for indoor photography at 4-5.6 and that, in general, L glass will be built nicer and produce better colors.

In the end, it is a fantastic value for money considering how conviniet this lens really is. Ive been on trips packing just that lens a whole bunch of times with great results.

I hope this helped. I might have mine for sale soon .

Well, Id like to get one lens and use it for a really long time. Dont want to get something and then replace it later.

I guess this would be the upgrade... Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM for EOS

Thanks

The 17-55 2.8 is a great lens. If I was not considering FF I'd pick one up right now.

A lot of my work on sheynk dot com was done with the 17-85.

As far as rolling shots... what do you mean? If you can track well and the AI servo in your camera works...you should be fine with rolling shots.

I wouldnt say its the best piece of glass out there. But for the money you cannot compete on the range and the IS.

If you can go for the 17-55 2.8.. then more power to you!

The EF-S 17-85 is considered to be a bit of a junker. The 17-55 on the other hand is close to be "L" glass, and universally praised.

For my money though, I'd go with either the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC or the Tamron AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II.

Unfortunately they'd only work on my 20D, leaving my 1D mk III very neglected otherwise I'd pick one up.

The 17-55 is 2x the price though. I agree that it is not the best lens on the continuum of lenses, but at the price point you only other options are non canon lenses (for better or worse).

I highly recommend going with the f/2.8 lens. I've had multiple situations where I really wished I had that extra bit of aperture so I could shoot faster.
