Any tips from the pros on the best way to approach these shots? Ideally I would want to balance the flare from the sun vs. detail in the darker areas.
Without filters, it's extremely difficult. You would need to meter half way between the sun itself, and ambient, but that's still cutting corners. You might even need to stack a CP filter, and a graduated ND filter to get a properly exposed shot. Shot number 1 and the rooster/chicken are right on the money. Good job.

Rebel XT w/ 85mm 1.8, 10-22 efs, 70-300is, 17-85is and a Canon SD870is. I have to say, the SD870 is really nice. I bought the Canon underwater case for is (~$170 or so I think) and it was awesome. Full access to all features. Did video and still shots in a variety of underwater conditions. For about $400 (camera+case) I don't think it can be beat. 28mm is great to have on a P&S. Only real downside is the lack of an optical viewfinder.

In Moorea we were at the Sheraton Lagoon Resort and Spa. From what I saw, it had the best snorkeling and bungalows (although the Sofitel was just renovated there). Went with the highest level overwater ("premium horizon") of which I think there are only 4. We were lucky to get #87 which is by far the best (furthest out, in the center, completely unobstructed view and the most privacy by far).

In Bora Bora we stayed at the St. Regis. It is a ridiculous resort, to say the least. Did the "Deluxe" overwater (#227) and it was fantastic. I will post pics in a new thread. The "bungalow" at the St. Regis is nearly 2000 sq. ft...

What a beautiful place, and such great photos. Looking forward to seeing more from Bora Bora. Can't wait to make it over there.
