I bought the much cheaper alternative to the 24-70 f/2.8 recently: the Tamron 28-70 f/2.8, which for about $400, seemed like a hell of a good deal. It's fantastically sharp, has great contrast and color rendition but unfortunately, it just doesn't live up to my expectations when used on my crop-body D200 because it's not quite wide enough and it's hard to appreciate the DOF of the 2.8 maximum aperture at these focal lengths when shooting cars. I really need to upgrade to something FF like a D700 or D3...

 

Got it yesterday. HUGE difference from my old D70.
