Where to start??

Practice as much as possible and gain experience. As you do this, take time to read (online, books, manuals, etc.) about different features of your particular camera and basic camera technique. If you learn the basics of angles, framing, shutter, and aperture you'll impress yourself with some shots you're able to get.
Most importantly, remember that even the best shoot a ton in order to get the ONE right picture. Not every picture is going to look good, so enjoy your time shooting, don't beat yourself up. Good luck!

pick up a book called understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson. it taught me a whole bunch about photography that i never knew, its probably one of the most important books ive owned. also go through your manual and learn about your camera, its very important to know your camera.
