I think they turned out great! Shooting the moon (no "hearts" pun intended!) is something I've used to help learn more about manual settings on my cameras. I'll sit out there and just change everything incrementally and figure out what gets the desired results. It's not super applicable in most things I shoot, but it's really got me thinking about settings.
What kind of exposure settings did you use for those? For this one from last year, my preferred result came from f/5.6, 1/2000 sec, ISO-200 @ 400mm, with a DX body on a tripod and timer, of course

I remember reading an interview with someone famous a while ago- he was telling the story of his experience with going all manual. He was emphatic about how it changed the way he looked at light.
I can see that, although I will always be a big fan of the 'right place right time' group. (from the front yard last week)

Beautiful shot, as usual!
I'd really love to be (and am working towards being) able to be in any situation and say "ah yes, f2.8 1/500th ISO200 +.3 will do for this" without even thinking twice.
I hate flashes (though I acknowledge their importance - especially as a filler) and I'm always after the perfect natural light shot. I really need to work on an learn a lot more about lighting.

Thanks, when I go to stuff like the space shuttle landing thing or events or trying for far shots like that, I'm always bringing a D7000 so I can have the extra reach of cropped with the long lenses.
I'd love to try a teleconverter, but I think the loss of sharpness/quality wouldn't be worth it.
