I've been dailying my sister's Jetta 2.5 since she moved to NY and did a major service on it this past week. Compared to other modern cars, it's a joy to work on. You're gonna enjoy modding the Golf R. I don't know if I would get too crazy on power mods, since it seems pretty healthy on hp, but some nice wheels and tires would be a great start.

LOVE those steering wheels as well, they just have a perfect feel to them.
