Why an S4 over and A4 or A6/S6

We both just think Audi's are great looking now. Maybe I'll start researching some used ones to see what a few less sheckles will buy you.

I couldn't drive it today because I ran out of time. Possibly tomorrow will be a good day for a Quattro drive with 3" of snow and ice on the road

I don't want other brands. If I get a new sedan type deal right now the only car is the Audi for me. Just looks great imho right now. VW's don't have anything that look great to me. BMW nothing I like. Mercedes...well I'm not 90...Maserati doesn't do it for me. Nothing American looks good. We just like the front ends.

No Audi diesels here.. other than the Q7

I'm surprised you find the A4 and A6 so similar - historically, there's always been a WORLD of difference in how they actually feel in size. I've had a couple of both. There's literally no leg room in the A4, and the trunk as well as the overall space inside of the A6 is considerably bigger. But it's never been particularly interesting to drive . . .
An A6 3.0TDI Quattro may very well be the best all-round DD in the world. And it out-torques an S6.

I've owned an S4, RS4, and going to get another S4 for the wife. Here's my breakdown:
1) If you're buying used, nothing, I mean NOTHING, beats a 2007/2008 RS4. Great-looking (needs nothing), fast, and comfortable. Also, they're pretty rare. I miss mine dearly.
2) If you're buying new, then the gap between A4 and S4 drops significantly once they're optioned similarly. IIRC, I built an A4 2.0T to match the standard equipment on an S4 Prestige (all bells and whistles) and the price gap was closer to $5K, which is a small price to pay for that engine.
3) If you just don't want to spend the money on a new one, and don't want to spend $45K+ on an RS4, then get a 2008 A4 2.0T Titanium Sport package car (sedan or wagon). The only mod it needs is a reflash. My buddy did his and it was QUICK.
I'm very partial to Audis, so my opinion will show. Also keep in mind some of the cars mentioned, like A6 diesels, aren't sold in the US. Finally, if you need a referral to an excellent Audi sales guy, let me know. They ship all over...
Good luck!

I really don't like the new body styles on any of the new Audis. I prefer BMWs, like the new 5 series. The M5, which isnt out yet looks brilliant, but the standard 535 should be fantastic for daily duties.
Since you prefer the Audis though, I would look at the B7 model A4 (for gas mileage) RS4 (for looks/sportiness).
This link should give you the model information broken down by the generations.
Fitting in the back should be no problem for the youngins' and unless you are monstrously tall should fit back there without problems. So the A4/RS4 should be a great car.

Honestly I've loved the looks on these things for 3 or 4 years now. They just all look good to me.

Thank you for that LINK..
I have 2 of 3 of my commuter cars that are 2 doors. I and the kids are tired of having to climb into the back seats. My 10 and 12 year olds are small and they fit ok in the back of the Mini. Well in the back of the Camaro but I guess I need a 4 door for the occassional family outing when we don't want to take the pickup or the tahoe.

I agree the A6/S6 variant seems much bigger inside now. I had just hopped in both and found them close. It's about 5" less leg room in the back of the A4/S4 version.
I will say I like driving the S4 more than the S6 I drove today. It seems like a much more fun car.
I drove a 08' S6 today that had 28k miles on it. Still priced within 2k of a brand new S4. I like the smaller engine and longer warranty on the 2011 vs the 2008. Honestly don't need that massive V10 that didn't seem that much faster than the S4 to me.
Neither had 6 speeds but they had the flappy paddles. My wife likes that idea for the type of use this car will get so I'm not totally against it.
I also like the looks of the S4 vs the S6/A6. The A6 I drove had plenty of power and really drove nicely. Overall I think these Audi Sedans drive as good as they look. Very nice cars. Very nice!
Now I need to get the 3 kids down to the dealer I guess and see how they feel about the different sizes. If the kids give the OK on a 4 variant I think that might be my choice. Now I just need to find a titanium packaged car so I don't have to mess with blacking out all of the chrome.
