Are the older S4's worth buying?

Two of my best friends had B5 S4's. Both kept their cars immaculate and babied them beyond belief. Both of them explain owning the cars as the worst decisions they ever made, despite them still saying they loved it. My understanding is that owning one is quite similar to rushing a Fraternity. It's the most fun that you'd never want to do ever again.

Every time I think I find a car I like I find out everything I don't want to hear and its back to the drawing board. Audi, Jaguar, etc... BMW's seem to be the only things that consistently run past 100k miles and are fairly affordable. Except that the BMW I would like to buy is the more expensive one that I don't know if I can quite afford. The "xi" models with AWD...

I owned a 01 s4 and it was a blast to drive. That being said, it had a lot of problems with timing belt, blown turbos, etc. Spent a lot of time in the shop. Listen to what GetLiquidNow said, if I was to ever own one again I would have money saved up for anything that can go wrong

Here is mine.. If you get one, go stage 3. By doing that you get reliability because of the upgraded parts. You also get 500-600 CHP. Here is my car...
I can beat the SL after I converted to E85..

Very nice car!!
ill have to look for some stage 3's, but I fear they may be out of my budget at the moment... I may have to just settle for a regular 'ol A4 with quattro. Found a nice 03 1.8t Dolphin Grey for $7k, but the miles are a bit high @ 140k. He's got a lot of extra parts on it, including painted panels, exhaust, short shifter, etc... And the interior looks to be in great condition (black leather). Maintenance is all kept up, including new water pump and timing belt about 3,000 miles ago. Just not sure...
