The B7 Avants have 40/60 drive train split, which IMHO, is a big improvement over the B5 and B6.

Only the manual cars have the 40/60 split. Automatic cars kept the 50/50 split. Manual Avants are incredibly rare.

The 3.0 TDi is quicker than an S4 in the real world, too. Spend a few hundred on a ECU flash and it's MUCH quicker.

Go for a 2008 S5, looks good, sounds good. And isn't that expensive.
The S4 is good, but looks a little bit boring, there's not so much difference between a A4 2.0TDI and a S4.
The A5 or S5 are always looking good. You'll find a good one, there's plenty of choice.
