I agree with Jox here 100%. I think the A5 is a much better and more modern car.

I loved the sound of the V8 in my S5, it is intoxicating.

I still think that the thinking man's A5 is the 2.0T quattro. Not sure why you can't get the S-Tronic (DSG) transmission in the US market, but IMO that's the best combo. If you're a manual-only kinda guy then this isn't an issue. How about this one?

The B7 shape is looking a bit tired now too.
My mom has the 3.2 FSI V6 in her A6, and I think it's a strong motor. Moves the car down the road well, gets pretty good mileage (~25MPG on the highway), and sounds decent.

What's old tech about it?

Wouldn't pay close to $40K for a B7 S4 of any type, I'd rather have an A5 2.0T and chip it. But, for $25K, it's a good pickup.

Still, I say you go with a S4 Avant.

08 manual S4 Avants with 25K miles are trading at close to what I paid for mine two years ago at over 40K.

Because of that, I don't think we'll ever sell it. I think we got our hands on a VAG classic that actually will hold value well, like the crazy price on Euro Van's even today!

Our A5 has the 3.2 FSI, its painfully slow, can't even keep up with COB's Lexus! but otherwise the car is amazing, I would buy it again with the same motor.

if performance is your concern look at the 335/135, for the price even the S5 is disappointing to be honest.

Meh, I'm not convinced. I think it's a solid motor.

Yeah, the markets on the Avants are super strong. If you look hard, you can find a 40K mile B7 for low $30K range (I think). B6's with similar mileage are moving in the mid $20K range. Some people aren't big on the B6's, but I like them pretty well.
