There is a lot of knowledgeable folks you can talk to about the old Audi's. 20v is the way to go, but you can always do a swap.
One fella I know of personally knows tons about them and he owns and runs a sport version in full rally trim, as well a standard urquattro waiting restoration.
He can be contacted on many of the Audi forums, but he resides primarily on texas audi group Welcome (it's his site)
