Considering a Monster 1100

You are correct on the clutch. Though I'm not sure what the difference is between the two in terms of feel. Is it just shifting smoothness? Are there durability advantages one way or the other?
Regarding output, the 2008 S4RS is an exception to that rule as it has 130hp and about the same amount of tq (1 ft lb more than the 2012).
And I find that curious... Sure, the S4RS was a limited run so they made it "special" with that power output. But using Porsche as an example, the next few model years following I would expect the tech to build on the earlier capabilities of the "special". But the 1100 Evo today is 100hp.
Not that I NEED that extra 30hp. I prob don't even need 100hp, but it sounds fun.
To avoid "used bike" headaches? Or another reason?

Neither bike is anywhere near me. I could prob sit on an 1100 if I made a trip out to New Orleans, but that's pretty tough these days. Maybe this weekend I'll try to make that happen. I have a distant memory of sitting on a small Monster a few years back. Seemed cozy as I recall. Taller than my old Shadow, but without that freaky forward position that crotch rockets have that I just can't get used to.

Partially to avoid any potential headaches, but also because I think the newer bikes are a step forward over the older monsters. I had an S2R 1000 and it was great, but I like the newer one more. I considered getting an S4RS, but it wasn't a "must have" for me.

"Smoky over here takin a shit!"
I had a Monster S4R. Best bike I ever owned. Although, be careful, it makes you ride like a hooligan.

i'd buy new. you get warranty and you can spec it.
i buy used only to save money and let PO take the depreciation and mod expenses. if your seller is trying to bake in the mod costs, what's the point? anyone can mod with money.
isn't the best thing about ducati is the TC? every duc owner loves that thing. even the die hards that hate electronics tell me they'd like it since it allows u to go faster.
i think the major service is at 7500 mi.
have you guys considered a street fighter?

I'd get the used one with goodies.
The service interval is 6,000 miles. If by "second" you are referring to the 600 mile inspection being the "first", the 6k is the usual inspection service without belts. Check everything, change oil, change air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, lube everything, etc. It's generally $5-600 bucks.
The "major" service is at 12,000, which is everything in the 6k plus timing belts and fork oil.
ABS and TC are bandaids for learning to ride properly, as are slipper clutches.
