Report: McLaren MP4-12C Smashes Top Gear Lap Record
#32
Incredible times if the rumors are true. I hope they are. And I would love to see McLaren come out with a "GT/Scud" version of the car...even though big Ron said there wouldn't be.
So early reports are that this car is without a doubt faster around any given track than a 458 & GT2 RS but nothing is confirmed?
Apparently Chris Harris's only complaint is that it didn't have a true LSD, so it becomes "problematic" if you want to hoon the car.

Yea not buying it at all. Especially the ring-time is pure bs. Cars are evolving yes, but not that fast, come on guys. If the Mp4 beats the GT2rs on the ring i promise I'll eat my left nut raw. Hell, if any car magazine manages to get the car around in less than 7:30 I'd be very very impressed. Don't believe any times you hear straight from the car manufacturers.

From Autoblog when MP4 12C was presented in Portugal
"Does the MP4-12C beat all comers at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, though? No times were told, but all the Woking kids grinned a lot, saying even they were blown away at the margin of advantage. World-beater then? One thing's for certain: King Dennis will not be embarassed."
It did 1min 14 seconds at Dunfolds track.

Yeah I agree that without the Stig at the wheel, this doesn't mean as much. However, if Top Gear do take it around the track and the Stig gets a time just 1 or 2 seconds slower, it will still be a great achievement. Does anyone know if the Stig takes cars for a few practice laps before setting the actual times to warm up the tires etc?

I don't want to witness the act, but maybe you could scan your hospital bill afterwards or something.
The McLaren has an AIRBRAKE that deploys at speed and you think it won't be as fast as the 911 GT2RS around the 'Ring? Think about that - in addition to slowing the car down significantly it also plants the rear of the car allowing the rear brakes to be more effective under braking. That's just one advantage the 12C has over the Porsche.
Take the transmission - the 12C uses a 7-speed sequential with pre-cog for near instantaneous shifts. The GT2 RS just has a tradition 6-speed manual. Add a few more seconds of advantage for the 12C of the course of a lap of the 'Ring.
It all adds up - or does it subtract?
Anyway, the 12C is sure to be quicker.
