Report: New Porsche 911 GT3 To Feature PDK Transmission Only
#42
Well looks like we will have a glorified Carrera S. So far we had a race pedigree engine, that was proven over and over again.
No more Getrag transmission, no more Dry sump, and now with PDK, wet sump and God knows what.
Still waiting to see how the new Cups will come out. We are really close to see the SuperCups running.
Sad day for sure, possibly my last Porsche track car.
The great attraction for a Porsche was always how reliable and capable they were and also the feeling, raw speed is important, but not as much as the pleasure the car can give, otherwise would be driving a ZR-1 or such.
Probably the only car that can take the abuse in stock for for thousands of miles and still drive back home.
I tried a lot of cars out there, including GT-R ... long story short still with a Porsche in my garage.
I just want to be proved wrong, that all.

IMO Porsche have learned their lesson with the RMS, IMS and other problems with the 996's... the 991 Carrera has been a strong performer so far, and i have faith that the GT3 will be a fantastic car-- reliable, and quite a bit faster than 996/7 GT3's. objectively a much "better" car, if lacking the motorsports heritage of the Mezger.
BUT...
as much as i have to agree that PDK's are the future and are definitely faster, whether it was a 458 or GTR or Lambo or Subaru BRZ that's i've driven, i can't shake the feeling that i'd simply get BORED of the paddles after a while.
sure its faster and attacking a circuit, having both hands on the wheel allow you to concentrate on the steering and braking... but i now spend far less time on a track chasing laptimes, and find that i get my driving yuks from just enjoying the car solo or with some buddies on an early morning run. for that, rowing the stick and getting the old heel and toe downshift just right are still priceless in my book.
i can't fault other people if they prefer PDK/DSG/DCT etc... but i just LIKE the extra work coz makes me feel more part of the action (even if i'm the weak link making the car slow!)

Thanks for the info here from your previous post. I agree..however Im not really sure when you say the 991 is a strong performer..its certainly a strong performer on the track.,.but a 997 is also good - however, in the books its not performing so well. I know that Porsche is publishing increase of 911 sales figures..but many of these are now sitting in official dealers..with prices in Germany massacered..sorry for my wordings but there are some dealers in Germany who have to fight for survival..and 991s with new price of 140,000€ and with 5000Km are still not selling at 110,000€..already since month now. The 997 values are dropping basically every day..
Anyway, coming back to your post, do not forget that the Mezger engine is allowed to run on slicks - the 9A1 engine - is officially not. That doesnt mean that it will be changed drastically for the 991 GT3 - which I still hope - but I have heard unfortunately other things. There have been other rumours that Porsche will not invest in 991 GT3 much anyway..since in a few years the whole thing will be abanded anyway. Current Motorsport legislation around the world is not in favour of Porsche..neither for the 991. The only exception will be Le Mans..to which Porsche is heavily committed.Anything else wil just cost money and not deliver any good "publicity results"
It were just some rumours..but read it carefully again..,you will see that it makes to a large degree sense.
I still hope it wont end up in this way..but I fear so..

everyone seems to be of the same opion on the pdk/manuel issue and i totally agree, to keep the flavour of what gt3 is all about this transmission needs to feel the real deal! after all we buy these cars for the senses they create and the wow factor, i recentley when for a drive in a freinds 430 scuderia , loads of drama, noise, it felt special , if this pdk feels like a carrera s with all the normal creature comforts and a big wing we will all feel cheated, as we know the 991 is as quick as the outgoning gt3 , it must create that special ''i dont want to stop driveing feeling'' and a jazzed up carrera s just wont do it!!!
