Will the 4.0 RS hold it's value.......
Guys I know this is speculation at this point, but do you believe the 4.0 RS will hold it's value? Is paying 40k over a big financial mistake? Will it drop like a rock when the 991 RS comes out? What's everyone's opinion? Where do we think prices on these cars will be four years from now? Does anyone think they will go up in value, maybe even past the 40-50k over many people have paid? Can't wait to hear everyones thoughts.

$40k over?

Not a chance it's going to hold that. I have heard of cars moving new at MSRP.

Will it hold up better than other 911s? I think it will. MSRP or better, I doubt it for long. Problem is they made tens of thousands of 997s.

I say it all depends on the 991 GT3.

steven0401 is an unknown quantity at this point
I suspect the the only rationale for its holding its value is its place as the last 'analogue' Porsche and the last Metzger motor. The newer ones will be faster, but not as direct or visceral. I think it will be in the tradition of the 356 Carrera GT or the 73 RS or the 993 GT2. It also has a direct connection to Porsche racing. I suspect that in the next 10 years it will be lucky to hold its own, but later will increase in value again. Uncanny how well it is now doing compared to recent limited production cars like the GT2RS.

I think both of these observations are correct.

The value, especially in the longer term, of the RS 4.0 will be determined largely by intangibles and the car's perception vs. the 991 GT3. If the 991 GT3 shocked us all and used the Mezger again, then it would be bad news for the RS 4.0's value. As it stands now, there are two types of owners of the car: those who want the latest and greatest (and are often serial Porsche flippers) and those who believe that the car is special and will be revered as the "last and greatest true 911." The first group will probably move on when the 991 GT3 (RS) comes along; the second group probably won't.

Let's say prices drop some over the next 18-24 months, and the 991 GT3 is numerically superior in virtually all performance categories, although perhaps not outright power - would you rather have a low miles, well-cared-for, unmolested RS 4.0 or a brand new 991 GT3 (RS) for similar money? I would take the RS 4.0.

Making numbers, if you have a 73 RS you can sell it now for many times its original price, but is the same amount for a new 4.0 RS

I think the RS 4.0 will be the most collectible 997. It is very limited in production, right at the end. As mentioned, it's the last of the Mezgers, and it was a Porsche Motorsport car, which is a big seal of approval. Personally, it's #1 on my list (with the GT2 RS) for my "dream" 997.

$40K over might not be recouped anytime soon, but I'd say it's a sure thing in the long run (20 yrs or so).

I don't think those cars will hold value very well at all. While it is a limited edition run, it's a limited edition run of the most produced 911 series yet. I don't see the 997 being collectable the way the aircooled cars are.

These are great cars, but there are just too many of them out there for anyone to care about collecting them in 10, 20, or 30 years. Good for guys like me that just want to own and drive them though.
