Yes, but at it's fundamental level the 918 is about bragging rights. The price makes it ostentatious, yes, but it also hasn't deterred sales of it either. Who is going to track their 918? I'd suspect no one. Who is gonna drive their 918 like an F40 owner drives their F40? No one, again, I suspect. It's performance is less important in this particular case, it's a really cool piece of jewelry.
Further, Porsche is quite smart to make a "hybrid" perceived as ultra-exclusive, which they hope will help the overall public acceptance of hybrids being "cool", since they are spending a lot of time and money researching the technology for the short and long term future of Porsche.

EDIT: Ok, not "lots of them", that wasn't fair as I know dozens of supercar owners not like that, but, you know, some of them absolutely buy more and better, etc just to one up their associates/friends.
