in other words, its one thing for a tuner to extract crazy power, and its another for Porsche, as a volume manufacturer, to produce cars that will be driven in sustained 40-degree temps, on the autobahn at WOT and 300kmh for prolonged periods, on one after another lap of the nurburgring, and by customers ranging from professional race drivers, to amateur ham-fisted oafs with no mechanical sympathy.

to paraphrase, he told me: "if we wanted to extract more power out of the engine, we could very easily do so. BUT the engine output is where it is at because that's what we believe is safe, given the huge range of conditions that our cars will be driven at, as well as the large volumes of cars sold."

i'm a contributor. but its the Philippines edition of TopGear note! licensed from the BBC, but NOT the UK one! so don't ask me to say what a pr*ck or a genius (depending on your POV) Clarkson is, because he doesn't know me from Adam!
