Interesting thread!

Can somebody tell me something about Andreas Preuninger? I know who he is, but I can't find anything about his background. He doesn't even have a wikipedia-page

Many many thanks for these excellent videos, probably the best official tech talk ever presented to the forums

Was that you at the end asking if the RS suspension bushings could be retrofitted to the standard GT2 ? It was great watching Preuninger hesitate as he wouldn't want to promote that but could lie since he is a professional engineer - great stuff

i was pleasantly surprised myself. the previous tech presentations i'd been to were for large groups of journalists, with a panel of presentors. so i guess that makes it more scripted, more stiff.

this was a very small group of us, as you could probably tell from the video. so the intimacy may have been behind Andreas' being more candid? i don't know. i also can't shake the feeling that he and his team are really proud of what they've created (and why not?!)... his enthusiasm seems quite sincere. gotta love that!

hahaha yup that was me! did it seem like he was hesitating coz he didn't know what to say? the impression i got was that he hadn't been asked the question before, so he had to think about it! either way, it was good info to know wasn't it? hehehe

this is an epic thread. Thanks so much for sharing all of this with us hersperus! I can't tell you how great it was to geek out on the technical engineering they talked about in the videos. Best 38 minutes i've had in a long while.

Cheers!

For those who don't "geek it" at Rennlist
I wonder if there is a bit of BS at 5:39 when Preuninger says:

"back then we had 550 horse power which we thought was the maximum we could extract from the engine"

Most standard GT2s have at least 540PS, mine had 544PS in stock form when engine dynoed so his statement seems strange ?

I had it on pretty good authority last year when they were developing the GT2RS that they were trying to use the Dfi turbo engine for the RS and it was this engine which was struggling at the 550PS level (I posted this on Rennlist somewhere at the time: Rennlist Discussion Forums - View Single Post - Update on tuning 997tt Gen II) and was deemed not reliable at these levels hence the old warhorse Mezger was wheeled back in and easily tweaked to the 620/640PS which it has in the RS......
We have come to expect this sort of BS from Porsche marketing but it is a bit sad when the chief engineer cannot be honest about the real sequence of events but then I guess he likes his job

hi Toby,

it may not sound so clear in the video i posted, but i really do remember him saying they had 560HP at the time... this would be comfortably more than the 530HP the GT2 officially shipped with. So i don't think it was BS maybe?

i would also point something else out... its odd that AP, when trying to remember the year of the GT2's introduction, he says "2005, 2006, something like that"... which all of us Porsche anoraks here on TS know is factually wrong. so it seems that perhaps with all of the projects that they are working on, its possible that dates, numbers, specs start to blur together?

anyway, one more bit of that is NOT in the video.

i had a brief chat with the younger engineer after the presentation. i basically asked him point blank, something to the effect of: "look, everybody knows that once your cars leave the factory, any tuner can extract another +100 or more HP out of the engines. so how can you say that the 2RS' 620HP is at the limit of the engine already?"

the answer i got, was exactly the answer i was expecting. which is not to say that i didn't believe it either, as it does make sense.

to paraphrase, he told me: "if we wanted to extract more power out of the engine, we could very easily do so. BUT the engine output is where it is at because that's what we believe is safe, given the huge range of conditions that our cars will be driven at, as well as the large volumes of cars sold."

in other words, its one thing for a tuner to extract crazy power, and its another for Porsche, as a volume manufacturer, to produce cars that will be driven in sustained 40-degree temps, on the autobahn at WOT and 300kmh for prolonged periods, on one after another lap of the nurburgring, and by customers ranging from professional race drivers, to amateur ham-fisted oafs with no mechanical sympathy.
