GL 450/550 Opinions?

My wife seems interested in the GL as her next vehicle and I'm soliciting opinions of any current or past owners. We won't be towing anything and it will jsut be a few years lease. Thanks!

GL550 is a great suv and its no slouch you can add the brabus body treatments to make it look sporty and mean which I like.

We had a GL550, great truck. Rode smooth, plenty of power, looked great! Go for it.

Thanks for the input, especially those that have/had one. Trying to decide if extra power of 550 is needed really, because other than that it doesn't offer anything special I need or can't get on the 450. I'll see if I can get an extended test-drive on a 450 which should help clarify.

Aston is an unknown quantity at this point
I have one...

Maybe I will be of some help as I own the 550.
The car itself is not a very exiting one. Whilst it does have an good engine its not nearly as responsive as the RR Supercharged or CTT. So its not a car that you choose 'cause of the pleasure of driving. Its way too big to use around town and it really does not make you feel as if you are aware of whats going on at all times.
I mainly use it to go offroading in it and its fantastic at that. I can think of very few cars that can with such ease go offraod. And of course the party piece is how much junk you can load inside. With the seats down, I have several times loaded my Jetski in it and it fits just fine.

A recomendation would be to not really hold back on the options as I think that if you have kids, the dvd system and other entertainment options (tv, large stereo system) is great and keeps them busy for longer rides. Also the two extra seats in the back helps when you dont have much bagguage.

As for the difference between the two engines, I really have no clue as I did not test drive anything other than the one I have (550) Its been bullet proof so far, unlike my previous mercs

btw, if your wife is looking for an merc, I most highly recomend the G wagon, not nearly as practical or user friendly, but my god does the G55 make you smile
