2 part question...
First: Anyone in Orange County, Ca area have a good reliable, Affordable *laughs*
mechanic or shop? I thought I had a great one, but the guy is so unreliable and takes forever that Im going to have to find another one.
Thanks.
Second: See if you can diagnose this problem...
My wife's 2001 740i sport has a very obvious metal on metal tapping noise coming from under the car. It is fairly loud. And sounds like it is coming from the middle to rear of the car, more on the passenger side if I had to guess. It occurs when the car is in motion, and speeds up when you accelerate and slows down when you do. Does not happen at idle or in park. Only while in motion. Car has been parked for a few weeks because ive been waiting for my mechanic to come look at it (he's mobile). Started during the heavy rain we had.
Any ideas guys? Im wondering if its going to cost me an arm and leg to fix it. I already have a lower engine seal oil leak that I know is going to blow my bank account. Unfortunately I love the car and its worth the repair prices imo...
Thanks for the help!

Found out what the tapping was…. Not too happy about it either.
I took the car to Ronin AutoWerks in Fullerton (They came highly recommended) and turns out my driveshaft assembly is busted. I'll be needing a new driveshaft. Great! Wonderful! F'n fantastic!! New: $1200, Used: Who knows… $700, $400, ??? I'll just add it to the $2500 growing repair bill of things I need to do. I wont get into the thermostat, MAF, O2 sensors, etc… This car is going to suck me dry! Damn you BMW! Its only got 100k miles on it!!!
Some possible light at the end of the tunnel: My friend says he can pull me a new driveshaft at the yard for $50. I'll believe it when I see it, but whats to say it wont just happen again? UGH! Beyond frustrated right now...
