MC riders are generally very aware of what is going on around them. Car drivers, especially in Southern CA, are the least attentive drivers anywhere that I have ever been. They are constantly on a cell phone, applying lipstick, eating, reading, etc., and I know at least 5 people that have died on MC's because of aloof drivers. Just pay attention to your mirrors, and don't move left or right if a MC is trying to pass you and you should be largely unaffected.

Lay on the horn, call the rozzers, whatever floats your boat. Or relax, crank up the stereo, and take some satisfaction in the fact that if they're riding like retards they're going to end up spam sooner or later.

I've never once seen a bike ride in close proximity to a car and stay there, that's just suicidal. I dunno what kind of nutjobs you have in CA, but that's just crazy.

Probably the reason for my strong dislike is because living in the canyons with some of the best roads around they swarm the place every weekend. Attracting both cars and bikes being piloted by idiots.

There is a pretty bad accident involving bikes around here at least once or twice a week, and during the summer there are always a few deaths.

I was a rider in CA (22k miles in about 18 months), and rode with a pack of other guys at times, and NONE of us ever rode next to any cars. We would split lanes to pass into a large open area of freeway, and generally we would stay there. Drivers in CA are just clueless, especially the younger drivers and women. Sexist or not, OC female drivers are the worst drivers I have ever come across, but that most likely has a lot to do with the fact that they are driving Beemers or huge Escalades and don't even know what a mirror is...

That's because they're busy with more important things, like texting Becky that some guy she just saw was hot. Considering I'm part of that age group, I know a few people like this. It's terrifying.

This story is beautiful. If I had my way, there would be jail time for riding down the left lane of the freeway. Oh yeah, and there wouldn't be any speed limits.

Also, I thought this comment was perfect:

I've noticed more and more recently that most drivers aren't even doing the speed limit on the freeway when roads are clear AND they're camped out in the left lane. Matter of fact, Tuesday some self-righteous granny decided to cut me off in the passing lane (as I was passing others at about 65) and then proceeded to drive 55 and give ME the finger. I guess she's the self appointed speed police. I'm with lotsofspareparts. I'll drive over the speed limit. You worry about yourself and feel free to laugh if I get pulled over but stop creating traffic back ups and get out of the way.
I honestly can't tell if this is serious:

Yup, we need to get out of the way for those speed demons. The faster they go the less time they have to react and stop in an emergency. This gives them a much greater kill factor. Just let them go and put everyone else at risk, maybe they'll find one of your loved ones while cruising over 70 down the freeway. Let's put some speed cameras on the freeways. Portable ones so they will never know where to expect them. And increase the speeding fines to $250 for 10 over. And start stopping drivers at 5 MPH over the posted speed. This will make an impact on the speed demons and reduce the risks to troopers and the public from stopping drivers on the freeway shoulders. We won't need the passing lane in most cases if there were no more speeders. How about treating speed demons like DUIs and make them install speed governors on their cars after two speeding tickets limiting their maximum speed to 60 MPH.. After all they are just as dangerous as a DUI..
If it is, this loser literally needs to die. Preferably in a car wreck where someone rear ends him because he won't do the speed limit. lol @ calling people who do over 70 "speed demons."

If I were world leader for a day, people like this candy-ass would lose the ability to drive because I would literally order that their feet and hands be shattered. Try holding up traffic when your fingers are in pieces, bitch.

I've always been amazed that here in Kommie-fornia, lane-splitting is legal.

Usually anything that closely resembles anything fun or efficient is banned and made illegal.

I've never once, in a decade and a half of riding a bike, seen one clog up a passing lane or camp in front of a clearly faster car. Not once, in 40,000 miles across a dozen states.

We blast around traffic for a number of reasons. They are, in order:

1) We can. Traffic sucks, and you would too if you could.

2) 98% of the driving public are unaware we exist, because they have the attention span and situational awareness of a diced carrot. The sooner we get the hell away from such people, the better chance we have of not being killed by them.

3) Being stuck in traffic on a 90+ degree day on a bike in gear is quite a lot different than sitting in a car with the A/C blasting. Bikes get hot. Air cooled bikes get REAL hot. Hence, if we have the choice between lane splitting and getting some air over the bike (and us) or sitting behind some retard while they text their friend, eat lunch, put on makeup, do their hair, change clothes, screw with the radio, etc, etc, etc-- you can bet we're going to do the former.
+1 to what you just said;

However, I have witnessed fellow rider straddle the passing lane and not let cars by. The worst offenders of this back home in New England are the self entitled HD rider idiots.

When I first rode bikes, I wasn't sure of what to do- trying to be polite and not over-take them, but in typical HD fag form, they would slow down when realizing I'm behind them.

Now? Fvck that. I'll smok'em as I pass'em with an extra blip of the throttle to let the tosser know they're about to be pwned. In the land of "Live Free or Die" NH the HD guys are among the worst. I speed up, so they try and keep up- as their face flaps in the wind and they hold on for dear life at 100+mph-

dats when I down shift, flip'em the bird and gtfo of there

A lot of the Harley riders around here are similar to what Stoppie described. They're out to cruise and don't care how fast they're going, regardless of which lane they may be in. A friend and I got yelled at by a self-righteous Harley rider last weekend for passing him in a designated passing zone when he was doing 30 in a 45. Maybe he was just pissed that the side pipes on our Viper were way louder than the pipes on his bike....

If we can deviate off topic for a bit, I'm getting a commuter bike one day in the relatively near future. 50+ MPG sure looks damned good right now, especially when a bike is actually fun to drive (**** ecoboxes).

I've heard from other riders that a 250 isn't enough, and that a 650 is the way to go. Should I start with a 250cc? I've seen several Kawasaki Ninja 250s go for a couple grand. The only thing I'm worried about is getting raped by the insurance company.
