I owned a D90 back in the day and have an lm002 and an H1 now. The d90 was cool, great for off roading and a fun around town truck. The H1 however is far superior. It is actually enjoyable to drive and can do or go anywhere. Buy the lowest mile, non wheeled H1 you can find and you will love it. The interior is rather spartan but that can be overcome for a few dollars!

Why not get a new Landcruiser? An X5? A Q7? An ML?
If I wanted a 4x4 that looked and drove like a sedan ... I'd get a sedan.

4x4 = (steel*solid axles^lockers)*ln(comfort)

That puts a D90 around this much [-----------------]
An old Land Cruiser this much [----------------------------------------]
And an X5 as much as a spoon of tar.

I found my 1972 Bronco to be at least as fun as either of my D90's (had a 95 AA Yellow and 97 BRGreen). About a quarter of the price for a nice one and you can get some serious horsepower.

Of your choices, do you have a preference gas vs. diesel? I'd go with D90 because I don't like hunting for diesel in some places.

A Defender has much better wheel articulation than most toyo's so the even though it isn't crammed full with diff locks stock vs. stock it'll get further in the brown bits without breaking stuff than a land cruiser.

To the OP: if you're looking for a SUV I think you should forget about the Defender/H1 and go shopping for a LR3/Toyota something. Both the H1 and the Defender will be incredible off the beaten path but blow anywhere else.

I'm torn. I got my fill of Hmmv's in the Army. And being in a reconnaissance unit, I REALLY got to see what a hmmv would do. I've managed to bust the wishbone on a hmmv before. And it was in a damn stylish way. Operating as OPFOR at NTC, while hauling ass running from away from an angry M1 Abrams.

I also got to see what a 90 and 110's would do as well. There is a reason that many of our special operations units used the Defenders.

The D's are more nimble, and I cannot think of a place where one topped the other as far as getting to the most extreme piece of dirt imaginable. Both rock. All things being equal, I'd make the choice based upon which one is going to be less of a pain in the ass to maintain.

However, if it were me making the choice right now, having used both of these vehicles in insane ways, I'd go with the Defender without a moments thought.
