REPORT: Land Rover replacing 61-year-old Defender model
#23
In fact, I bought it in Cherry Hill, NJ, and drove it home over two and a half days to Salt Lake City in the middle of the winter. Top speed: 65 mph downhill...lol.

Now that is brave.

The D90 is the only vehicle I've had that can't maintain highway speeds if there is any kind of incline in the road. Sometimes you need a running start.
You must have a lot of silicone on that hard top. Part of owning a D90 is getting wet in the rain and the wind in your face, all while having the roof on and the windows up.

I put over 2000 miles on the Td5 Defender in my avatar this summer, mostly highway driving through France. Topspeed downhill: 100 MPH! (GPS confirmed) Though once you get it past ~70 both the doors and side panels will start flapping in the wind and your ears will start bleeding.
However if you know how to drive one you can surprise a lot people at traffic lights because it has so much torque and it isn't that heavy. Spool up the turbo before you let the clutch up, shift through first as fast as possible (basically a crawlgear anyway) and nail it in 2nd or 3rd. Screeching tires and leaving a prius in a cloud of black smoke =

There were some steep inclines on the way and occasionally I would drop down to 50 mph just to lure some eco crapbox to come alongside, then nail it (without shifting down) and it would just pull uphill to 80+ no problem. Always leaving the random 1.6 diesel ecobox for dead.
Here's a vid showing a new Puma engined Defender with its limiter removed topping out at about 170 km/h, for anyone wondering how noisy the car actually is at such speeds (fast forward to 1:30):

Ok this is a softtop but believe me the hardtop isn't that much quieter. There isn't any sound deadening at all; inside you're looking at the same aluminium panel as outside.
Love it to death though.
