Laptop Suggestions?

Don't bother getting those cheapo ones. You will feel so restricted to the point that you will want to throw it out the windows. Get yourself the new sony Z (used one are available many places, just have to keep your eyes open. I got mine when it first came out and with some negotiation with Sony, I got mine direct from them almost $500 cheaper than everybody else. Yea, I know how to talk lol). You will definitely thank me later on, I promise.

netbooks are pretty much useless. they are slower than a 8 yr old laptop. launching something takes like 10+ secs to even get a response.
i'd never buy an Asus. they are all about looks and have poor technical designs.
i stick with what works - toshiba, ibm. i want laptops that last for years since i am on it all day. nothing is more frustrating than a broken pc. well, maybe a broken car.

1. TS & other web surfing
2. Youtube & other basic media watching (
)3. Email
4. Write papers for school
5. instant messaging
basically a "cheapo" is all I need. Sure it would be nice to get a high powered laptop but right now I've got limited $$ and other priorities.

i've never owned one, but i've tested out a few in retail stores and haven't experienced anything like that.

I think you're mistaken with Macbooks

I agree that nothing would be more frustrating, but I'd rather buy a $300 laptop every 1-2 years than a $1500 laptop every 3.

We just evaluted the new "mini" laptops and we have a Dell, Toshiba, ASUS, and a Lenovo. The ASUS and the Toshiba came out on top. I picked up a Toshiba running XP and it's great. I have a $2K laptop on my desk and for 99% of what I need the Toshiba runs great. I plugged it into my 24" display with a wireless keyboard and mouse, it's competitive with the big laptop in almost every way. It runs into issues with Photoshop and large video files but other than that it's great. Paid $430 for it and an extra 1Gig of RAM. Here's what I got:
Amazon.com: Toshiba Mini NB205-N312/BL 10.1-Inch Royal Blue Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life: Computers & PC Hardware
Roy
ps. Full sized keyboard and 9 hour battery life.
