550 Barchetta or 575 Superamerica?
#4
Hi there mike,
If it was up to me, I would go for the 550 Barchetta. The car just has something magical to it! The carbon steering wheel and open gated shifter are fantastic! It has that retro-ness. The 550 is slightly rarer too, when comparing production numbers.
The Superamerica never really did it for me, even though I prefer the 575M to the 550. It just seems to me, that the Superamerica was never properly appreciated (very subjective, I'll admit). The flipable roof it has also doesn't quite make it a convertible. I have heard some people having problems with the dimming of the roof as well. The car with the roof closed looks terrible in my opinion (when being compared to a normal coupe). The rear with the big ferrari shield isn't appealing to me either.
Personally, what I have been looking for for ages is a 2005 575M HGTC factory equipped car with a MANUAL transmission in a dark color (bucket seats are a must!). The guys in the ferrari world call it the unicorn... I have been looking for years now! However, based on your question, you are looking for an open top.
I'd say go for the 550! Mystical automobile!

Yannick

I wouldn't buy any of them to be honest, just because as 670-SV told there're plenty of goodies in the pipeline, but knowing that you're not interested so much in mainstream supercars, my advice would be to go with 550 Barchetta if you really decided you're getting one or another.
And lemme explain why - this car delivers you raw fun, I drove a Barchetta and was driven in 575 SA, and I really fell in love with the Barchetta. This car really delivers some sort of unique raw fun, while 575 SA really felt like a ordinary 575 with big panorama roof and a bit heavier.
There's something about the looks, feelings when driving that would make me choose a Barchetta in a heartbeat.
And that was one of main reasons why Ferrari returned to old scheme with SA Aperta - majority of VIP customers wanted not to repeat 575 SA.
575 SA is amazing car and enjoyable as well, but just not my cup of tea.
But the choice is up to you and your own feelings my friend.

I would take the 550 Barchetta over the 575 SA every day. The Barchetta is much more puristic and rawer than the 575 SA plus nearly every 575 SA has issues with glass-roof system. The costs to fix that would scare me off ("The motorized carrier tends to fail, AND the glass tends to delaminate. It is a common problem. The carrier is about $10,500, and the top is about $26k (just for the top assembly....add another grand for labor")

The open top never did it for me with this car, but loved the 575M. So my poll vote was neither. Just save up for the F12
