If you extremely love it do it, otherwise you will just have cars that dont meet your requirments. A long test drive would be nice, better to drive it in 1+hour plus to see how it does in your regular commute and driving locations.
Keep in mind that you could get the 599 replacment pretty soon, then you also think that you want to release the GTO for the 599 replacment.

If you want future classic which has really perfect handling for both streets and track, few buds of mine with long Ferrari experience history, just like you John, after driving GTO were amazed by this car.
On other side - if you want to get the latest tech possible from Ferrari then you should probably wait for 599 replacement.
In any case with both of possible choices its hard to lose. GTO is awesome, but I thing next 599 will be great too.

I can of course not tell you anything about how the car drives or is to live with.
There are quite a few reviews, all of them quite positiv I think:

Jason Plato Ferrari 599 GTO Full Test Review Fifth Gear Season 17 Episode 07 S17E07 HD - YouTube
Think you can get most info out of this:
Ferrari 599 GTO road review - evo Magazine - YouTube
"Feels like you have to work a lot harder to get the performance you do in lets say a scuderia or a 458, I think Ferrari just makes it's midenginge cars easier to drive..."
Maybe look at it from a different point of view. What you are buying is a limited Ferrari, you say you dont care and that is fine, but with the GTO tag you have a pretty good chance of keeping the value of the car up or may be even get a little bit more in the end if you want to sell it one day. With that in mind you cant really loose, you get an amazing car, a great part of Ferrari history and once you will sell it you won't loose that much after all...unless you turn the traction control and crash it haha

I'm sure Saudi_Ferrari bought the first GTO in his part of the world, drove it for a few months and is now ready to trade it in or sell it at a massive loss. You should send him a pm and see if he will sell you his.
