engine detailing advice

i need advice how to go about detailing my 1985 500sel mercedes engine bay.
i dont think it ever has been done.
what products can i use , safely
should i use houshold cleaners like Fantastik or things like that , the biodegradable versions?
what can i get from my local auto store,

Engine Cleaning & Detailing - Autopia.org

This is a start. There are a lot of articles out there about engine bay cleaning and care; mostly on the detailing-oriented web sites.

On my 87 SL, I won't go near it with a power washer like some use. Be very careful with the electronics. I do as much as I can by hand.
