Quick Compound Product Question

Quick Compound Product Question
I am planning on undertaking a full detail this weekend (wash, clay, compound, wax) and had a few questions about technique most of all. I recently purchased Meguiar's Ultimate Compound (supposedly similar in cutting power to m105) though uses their new "micro-abrasive technology" which is supposed to mitigate additional swirl marks. I have decent experience with detailing in general terms, but have never used a compound before. After reading up on this product on Meguiar's website, on the bottle, etc. I decided I would give it a try this weekend. I have been doing some additional research on detailing forums and the like, and have seen some true horror stories from using this, but have also seen some unbelievable successes.
I will be applying the product by hand, and know all of the basic rules/tips such as using a foam applicator, do a test spot first, work in slowly with an even pressure, do not allow the product to dry, etc. I was wondering if there are any other tips you guys have that would ensure I don't end up a horror story? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
