Small SUVs are less likely to have these issues. You don't see RAV4 or EX35 drivers changing lanes without seeing that there is a car in the way. Because these small SUVs are not that different to cars. But the Escalades, Audi Q7s, X5s, Explorers, Highlanders, etc. provide a very different driving environment to a car.

At a minimum people should be required to take tests and have special licenses to operate these vehicles. Allowing some weak American driver to switch from a civic to an explorer because she had a kid is just silly.
You are right to some extent. There is a HUGE problem with people having a false sense of security in SUVs. Especially when the weather turns- having 4x4 does not mean that you are able to STOP any better. Moreover your vehicle is a thousand pounds heavier, compounding the problem of the increased speed with false sense of security (in inclement weather). TBH, around me when you see a rav4 or an ex35 I am more worried because they are usually teen girls who have no idea how to drive and are texting about their recent break up. I am actually playing some devils advocate with you because I think there is an SUV problem, but not because the vehicles are problematic, but because the people who buy them don't know what to do. I laugh with my friends because on my street it seems every wife has a yukon; I am certain they are given to you when you buy a house here. So yes, the driving is terrible, but these women are just bad drivers to begin with. They give SUVs a bad name. But outlawing the SUV does not fix the problem. Then minivans would again become the home of terrible driving. I have a had a few friends get into accidents (all caused by other drivers) where their LIFE was saved by being in an SUV.

I agree with you that these women are bad drivers to begin with. But the SUVs compound that problem because they are more challenging to drive.

Besides women in Europe seem to get by perfectly well shuttling their kids in station wagons and compact minivans like the B-Class Mercedes. Why do our women need giant SUVs?

But that said I don't really support outlawing SUVs. But I would like to see more people priced out of that segment either via high fuel prices or via taxation.

Nah, the explorer looks like a brick compared with the Evoque.

See I has thought you made some good points, and I agreed that perhaps better driving tests or requiremts would be beneficial. Now, I vehemently disagree with you. Using fuel prices or taxation to exclude people from a segment is policy that I do not agree with. Moreover the correlation you imply is irrational, that of poor suv drivers being the ones who have the lesser driving ability. You will still have rich suv drivers, thus not alleviating the initial problem of the bad drivers.
