While not a passenger plane, the new Sikorsky helicopter is quite the leap in helicopter technology.
We may have to wait for oil to become much more expensive before we see any big changes on passenger airliners.

These days it's largely a revisit of that early work with better materials and engineering tools.

Pretty sure the Boeing concept makes the most sense to me.
Lifting body means the frontal area drag is offset by more lift generated by that same force.
Plus the wider aisles and available room inside for people means less sardine feeling.
